Step-by-step process
Open UMANG
Open the UMANG app and select "UAN Allotment and Activation" under EPFO services.
Enter details
Enter Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to Aadhaar, then tick consent.
OTP verification
Tap "Send OTP" and complete verification with the OTP received on the linked mobile.
Aadhaar linkage check
The system checks if Aadhaar is already linked to an existing UAN — if so, the process ends there.
Face Authentication
If not already linked, the associate completes Aadhaar Face Authentication via the Aadhaar Face RD app.
Auto-filled details
Name, DOB, gender and address are auto-filled from Aadhaar; the associate confirms relation details.
UAN generated
The system generates and activates the UAN, then sends the UAN number and default password by SMS.
First login
The associate logs into the UAN Member Portal and changes the default password using "Change Password".
Ready for payroll
An activated UAN then flows straight into onboarding and Payroll Management — no manual follow-up needed.
Common questions about UAN Activation
What if the Aadhaar or mobile number entered is invalid?
The associate rechecks and re-enters the details — a mismatch with UIDAI or EPFO records is the most common reason activation fails at this step.
What if the OTP doesn't arrive or fails?
Simply resend the OTP or retry — this is usually a network delay rather than a system issue.
What if Face Authentication fails?
Retry in a well-lit environment with the camera lens clean and the face centred in frame; if it still fails, our support team steps in.
What if the associate already has a UAN?
The system shows a notification and redirects to the EPFO services home page — the existing UAN is retrieved instead of a new one being issued.
